Mom. Dad.
There’s something I carry that I’ve never said to you.
Sometimes I feel like I’m failing you.
Not loudly. Not dramatically.
Just quietly. Every day.
When relatives ask about my marriage, I pretend it doesn’t affect me.
I laugh it off. I say, “It’ll happen.” I act confident.
But when I see you sitting there answering politely, explaining gently, I feel something sharp inside me.
I feel like I’ve put you in a position where you have to defend my timeline.
And I hate that.
Mom, when someone says, “She’s 29 now, right?” and you smile like it’s nothing, I see your eyes.
Dad, when you say, “She’ll decide soon,” but your voice sounds slightly tired, I hear it.
You may think I don’t notice.
But I do.
And sometimes, after everyone leaves, I go to my room and cry quietly because I feel like I’m the reason there is tension in this house.
There are nights I lie awake and think:
If I had just said yes to that proposal…
If I had adjusted a little more…
If I weren’t so stubborn about compatibility…
Would you both be more relaxed right now?
Would Mom sleep better?
Would Dad stop worrying about “what people will say”?
Sometimes I feel selfish for wanting more than just “good enough.”
I know you want security for me.
I know you’re scared of time passing.
I know you don’t want me to struggle later.
But sometimes it feels like I’m racing against a clock that isn’t even mine.
And every time I don’t choose someone, I feel like I’m adding weight to your shoulders.
I never wanted to be a weight.
I wanted to be proud.
There’s a thought that scares me to even write:
Sometimes I feel like an unfinished responsibility in this house.
Like a task pending.
Like something that needs to be “settled” before you can breathe fully.
And that thought makes me feel small in my own room.
Because this is the same house where I learned confidence.
And now I’m quietly doubting myself inside it.
I don’t delay marriage because I don’t care.
I delay because I care too much.
I’m terrified of choosing wrong and coming back broken.
I’m terrified of smiling through a life that doesn’t feel safe.
I’m terrified of disappointing you more later than I might be now.
But sometimes, in protecting my future, I feel like I’m hurting your present.
And that guilt is heavy.
I need you to know something.
If I ever seem calm, I’m not.
If I ever say, “I’m fine,” I’m calculating.
Calculating how much longer before this becomes unbearable.
Calculating how much longer before you start losing patience with me.
Calculating how to balance your dreams and my instincts without losing either.
I love you more than I love my fear.
But I can’t silence my fear just to make the house quieter.
I don’t want to rush my life because society is impatient.
I don’t want to enter a marriage to remove pressure from this home.
I want to walk into it feeling steady.
Not guilty.
Please don’t see me as delayed.
Please don’t see me as difficult.
Please don’t carry shame because of me.
I am not trying to test your patience.
I am trying to protect the life you raised me to deserve.
Even if it takes longer.
Even if it makes this phase uncomfortable.
Even if it makes me feel like I’m letting you down.
And if I ever become too quiet…
too apologetic…
too agreeable…
It’s not because I don’t know my worth.
It’s because I don’t want to be the reason your hearts feel heavy.
I’m sorry, this is hard.
I promise I’m trying.
Your daughter. 🤍
