The Tattoo I Would Get. If I Ever Became Brave Enough

—

People usually get tattoos to remember something.

A place.
A person.
A moment that changed their life.

But if I ever got a tattoo, it wouldn’t be to remember something beautiful.

It would be to remember something difficult.

A reminder of who I almost became

There was a phase in my life when I almost lost myself.

Not in a dramatic way.

But slowly.

Trying to meet expectations.
Trying to be the “right” version of myself for everyone.
Trying to avoid disappointing people.

I became quieter than I really was.

More agreeable than I truly felt.

And for a while, I thought that was maturity.

But it wasn’t.

It was fear.

The word I would choose

If I ever got a tattoo, it would be one small word:

“Enough.”

Because for years, I questioned that.

Am I good enough?
Am I doing enough?
Am I becoming enough?

And somewhere along the way, I realized something that felt both simple and revolutionary.

I don’t have to prove my worth every day.

I don’t have to shrink my voice to make others comfortable.

I don’t have to rush my life to match someone else’s timeline.

I am already enough.

Where I would place it

I wouldn’t put it somewhere obvious.

Not on my arm where the world could see it easily.

I’d place it somewhere quiet.

Maybe on the inside of my wrist.

Somewhere I could glance at it on the days when doubt returns.

Because doubt always returns.

And sometimes we need reminders of the things we once learned the hard way.

Why a tattoo like that matters

A tattoo like that wouldn’t be decoration.

It would be a promise.

A promise to the younger version of me who felt like she had to become smaller to be loved.

A promise to the future version of me who might forget this lesson again.

That I don’t need to earn my worth.

I just need to remember it.

A quiet truth

Maybe I’ll never actually get that tattoo.

Maybe the word will only live in my mind.

But the meaning will stay the same.

And sometimes the most important promises we make aren’t written in ink.

They’re written in the way we choose to live afterward.
