I Loved You in a Way You Didn’t Know How to Hold

—

I don’t think you were a bad person.

And maybe that’s what made it harder.

Because it would have been easier to leave
if I could simply say you were wrong.

But you weren’t.

You just, didn’t love me right.

The kind of love that confuses you

You cared.

I know you did.

In your own way.
In your own timing.
In your own limits.

But your love felt inconsistent.

Some days, it felt like I mattered.
Other days, it felt like I was optional.

And I kept trying to understand which one was real.

The way I adjusted

I started changing without realizing it.

I became quieter.
Less expressive.
Less demanding.

I stopped saying things that might “complicate” us.
I stopped asking questions I was scared to hear answers to.

I told myself:

“Don’t expect too much.”
“Be patient.”
“Don’t ruin this.”

Even when I felt something wasn’t right.

The truth I avoided

I wasn’t asking for too much.

I was asking the wrong person.

And that realization didn’t come all at once.

It came slowly.

In small disappointments.
In unanswered messages.
In moments where I felt alone, even with you.

The hardest part

The hardest part wasn’t losing you.

It was accepting that I stayed longer than I should have.

That I kept trying to make something work
that was never stable to begin with.

That I convinced myself love meant adjusting endlessly.

The part I still feel

Sometimes I still wonder,

If I had been calmer,
Less emotional,
Less attached,

Would you have stayed differently?

But deep down, I know the answer.

I shouldn’t have had to become less
to be loved more.

What I understand now

You didn’t love me wrong on purpose.

You loved me the only way you knew how.

But that doesn’t mean it was enough for me.

And that doesn’t make me difficult.

It makes me honest.

A quiet truth

Loving someone who couldn’t love you right
teaches you something painful:

That love alone is not enough.

That consistency matters.
That clarity matters.
That emotional safety matters.

And now

I don’t hate you.

I don’t even regret loving you.

But I see it clearly now.

I gave you a version of me
that deserved more than what you could offer.

And maybe the real lesson wasn’t about you.

Maybe it was about finally learning
that I deserve to be loved in a way
that doesn’t make me question myself.
